Well we knew the day would come....

With two boys I knew our day was coming for an inaugural visit to the emergency room. That day arrived this past Saturday. Steve and I had decided to divide and conquer the errands. Luke and I were just returning from a Wal-Mart trip. I was letting Luke play in the van while I unloaded groceries. I had just grabbed an armful when the phone rang. It was Steve.
Steve: "I need you to meet me at the emergency room. Grayson fell and hit his head."
Me: "Is it that bad?"
Steve: "Yes, he's got blood everywhere. I'm on my way. Meet me there."
Me: "OK."
So I drop the groceries in the kitchen and run back out to the van. Here's where Murphy's Law decided to pay me a visit. I get ready to wrangle Luke back in his carseat when I realize that Luke has locked me out of the van. He has never done this before and thinks it's great fun now watching Mommy freak out because she can't open the door. Luke, happily nestled in the driver's seat, proclaims, "Look Mommy. Me drivin'." I show him the lock and tell him he needs to pull it up. Bless his heart, he does try, but he just looks up at me and says, "Me can't do it, Mommy. Me can't do it." At this point I'm thinking, "Really? Really? Is this seriously happening right now?" Reality kicks in and I try to remember where the spare keys are. Keys are located, Luke relocated to his carseat, and off we go. Whew.

At the hospital, I arrive to find this:
The whole way there I was just hoping it wasn't on his face...so of course that's where it was. Turns out he was helping Steve with the cardboard recycling and tripped just as he was walking into the container. His head met the metal door. Metal door won. He was a trooper, though. He wasn't even crying when I got there. Steve had him all cleaned up and settled down. He was actually, dare I say, "perky" through most of the ordeal. Here he is showing me his "hole in his head." You could actually see his skull if you looked carefully through the hole. Eeeewwwww.

And here he is being a happy camper with the Nintendo DS I fortunately had in my purse. Thank goodness for video games! He played that DS practically the whole time and only cried twice - once when they injected the lidocaine. The second time he cried was when they were sewing him up and they had told him not to touch his face. All of a sudden he starts crying hysterically so the doctor thought the lidocaine was wearing off. When Grayson composed himself enough to talk he told us he was crying because his nose itched and they had told him not to touch his face. Poor thing :-(And here's the final result. Six stitches on the inside and six outside. Good as new!

We had told the boys that after we finished errands we were going to the train museum in Roanoke that morning. Of course now we had about a 3 hour delay and it was already afternoon. When Grayson woke up from his nap he still wanted to go to the train museum so we spent the morning in the ER and the afternoon at the train museum and Chik-fil-A. Gotta love the resilience of kids!
